Just moved to south eastern georgia and was wondering if anybody had done any flyfishing down this way. I know the chattahoochie has some great trout up north of atlanta but that is too far to drive every weekend. More interested in trying to learn how to fly fish for bass and crappie.

Hey Jim,
I've been to Georgia and watched fellows flyfishing but I cannot add much except I do know one guy that spent time at Fort Benning and would fly fish all the time for bass, crappie and other fish right in the Chattahoochie River which runs through the Fort. I'll try to track him down and get him to repond. You can also try contacting these folks: http://www.georgiasportsmanmag.com/fishing/flyfishing-fishing/

I have spent some time in Georgia, where I learned how to tie poppers and sliders and had some great fun! I and the fish liked green frog versions and bait fish patterns (light bottoms and darker tops). I watched some videos on "traditional" bass fishing with spinning rods and tried to mimick how their lures acted.

For flies there is a great article in Fly Tyer Magazine (winter 2006) on how to tie tube fly poppers. It is a Great article and I cannot wait to try out my own versions.

My favorite water was the chattahocchee River and various unnamed ponds around FT Benning, specifically in the Sand Hill area.

Good Luck

Spent Easter weekend fishing in the Columbus GA area and had some luck, but moticed that most of the bass where just starting to make their spawning beds and where not real interested in feeding. I was able to entice some nice two and three pund bass into biting but I think they were more motivated by aggression than hunger. The fishing should get alot better once the bass lay their eggs. I cannot wait!!

Oh yea I had the best luck using a olive green wolly bugger with a slow irradict retrieve along the bootom near structure.
