Bought a 1977 Starcraft 25' cruiser. Took it out for it's first run and made it 8 and 1/2 miles up the lake when it started loosing power and then died. I started it and it ran fine in nuetral but as soon as I put it in gear it would spit and sputter and would not rev up, then would die. I started it several times with the same results. Then it would not start, acts like something is locked up as the engine will not spin over using the starter. Have not tried to manually turn it over yet. I was running down the lake at about 3000 rpm's and it started losing power and went down to about 1200 rpms but if I tried to increase the gas it would just spit and die. But when it did start, only in nuetral it would rev up and sounded fine. Any ideas where to start. The engine is a 233 hp ford v8. Was towed back to the marina and several people said the outdrive probably went out, doesn't make sense to me but they said it happens a lot. I am new to this but would appreciate any opinions as far as what to check first. Thanks all. Jim

Pull the spark plugs and crank over the engine. If any water comes out of a cylinder the exhaust manifolds need to be replaced.
