I recently bought a sailboat with Yacht Specialties steering pedestal and a single lever engine control off to the side on the port bulkhead. I prefer controls mounted on the pedestal. Y.S. parts are not available and Edson tells me I should buy a new Edson pedestal. My question is: Is there any reason why it won't work to build a sturdy platform attached to the pedestal guard and install on the platform a control such as the one advertised as Twin Lever Control with 33C type cables. The engine is a Yanmar 12HP diesel. I would install a suitable deck-mounted tube to cover the cables.

Many thanks for some expert advice.

those seem to be inexpensive options. The latter would result in a 4x4x2" box

Sure, something like this should work...
I am sure Edson thought that you should buy all new from them. Simple solustion, but not nessesarily cost effective.

Did the pedestal have a hole for engine controls? As you said, you could build an attached box and include kill, key stwitch, control into one area. I would build it so that it attaches to the guard BUT the box itself is on one side (starboard).

Thank you 38. It's nice to have confirmation before I do the work that there's not unforseen problems that will make it a waste of time.
