Have 20hp Mercury 2 cyl 2 stroke.
Broke off part of the trigger assembly pivot & made temporary repair. Trigger assembley rotates OK, moving the trigger head through some 40 degrees. But where do I set the static point to start the engine.
Sometimes the engine starts and runs for a minute or so and then stops. I have tried trial and error adjusting for retard and advance but still not starting easily.
Until I actually set the initial static setting I cannot really trouble shoot any remaining problem - like is the water pumping through.

i have the Clymer manual for the engine but it only gives the timing adjustment when the engine is running, mine does not run long enough.

Any help or suggestion appreciated.

You need to replace the trigger and set the timing before you can go any further.
