What type of ignition switch do I buy to replace the original one from my '69 40hp Evinrude? Can I just buy one off the shelf at the local boat shop, or do I need one that is specific to my engine?

Hello, bottom line is how many terminals are on the back of the switch and do you push the key in to choke the engine.

Here's what the back of the present switch looks like;

It has 6 electrical connections on the back and there is also a separate choke switch.

Clockwise from the top right the connections are labeled and the wires are colored like this

"A" No wire coming in, just a Green that goes to the choke switch

"M" Black

"B" red

"M" Black

"S" White

"O" (or perhaps "C") with no wire connected to it

The separate choke switch has a blue wire connected to it along with the green

What do I buy to replace this and how do I wire the new one?

Thanks

Ok you can go with any 6 pole switch. They will have the same letters on the back. It will hook up the same as the old switch.

I haven't been able to locate a switch with 6 poles anywhere on line. I will also need a new choke switch. Is there any way to wire it to a push-to-choke switch?[/i]
